F51 is the world’s first purpose-built multi-storey skatepark. Located in Folkestone on the UK’s south east coast, the modern, world-class

building was designed by Guy Holloway Architects.

It’s aim? To revolutionise not just towns and cities, but also the way that youth and sports facilities are incorporated into urban planning.

Along with 2,100 square metres of skateable surface and suspended concrete bowls, F51 is home to 15m high climbing walls offering over

580 square metres of climbing and bouldering space and boxing apparatus.

Working in collaboration with Guy Holloway Architects and the Roger De Hann Charitable Trust, P A Grant Electrical Contractors Ltd established

a complete lighting scheme for this £17 million project using indoor and outdoor solutions from Thorn.

“All products were selected for their rigidity, lighting quality and efficiency,” said Key Account Manager, Nick Hughes. “For the concrete bowls

and skating areas, approximately 500 AquaForce Pro luminaires were used. They fitted the application perfectly due to their wide beam optics

and drip edge design which prevents dust depositing on the light output surface - essential in this open wire mesh building.” In addition to its

low maintenance qualities, the energy saving opportunities it offers makes AquaForce Pro a responsible choice.

Emergency lighting was also an important consideration in this popular sporting venue. The use of Voyager Star meant that the quantity

of luminaires was minimised while still meeting all relevant safety standards.

Outside, PLAZA 35 floodlights provide a uniform, warm lit effect to the building façade without spilling light onto neighbouring residential

and commercial properties. Due to the high performance of PLAZA 35, the quantity of required luminaires was reduced by 30% - another tick

in the energy-saving box.

Other products selected from Thorn’s portfolio included Omega Pro, ForceLED and EyeKon.

Paul Grant, Managing Director of P A Grant Electrical Contractor said, “We really enjoyed working with Thorn Lighting on this project and found

that the luminaires were well selected for this specific application. The service, from elements of design right through to delivery, was very

good and the highlight was seeing the Plaza 35s transform the exterior of the building into a landmark. By choosing Thorn, we knew we’d

be working with a competent partner, so felt assured that the design would be correct and suitable, and we had confidence in the

products themselves, as well as the aftercare service.”
